Ground glass image

Postby Ray Heath » 24 Oct 2012, 07:35

A digital image captured through the ground glass (scourered acrylic sheet) of my homemade simple lens sliding box 8x10 camera.

Image was desaturated, cleaned up and slightly sharpened in Photoshop.

Photoshop is really powerful, I used that before on my previous work as graphic designer. I do lot of image editing in that cool tool.

Good one Ray! "Image was desaturated, cleaned up and slightly sharpened in Photoshop." but, I've got to chuckle, also turned upside down. It took me quite a while to tumble to the trick. :D

Wonderful tricks to get an awesome shot like that. Additional tips for taking pictures for my photography portfolio.

Thanks for the kind words C. and Walter.

Perhaps I should start posting again Walter.

But, of course Ray. Celebrate your vision and the fact that you can shoot LF. After the theft of my kit that is an avenue of production no longer available to me at present.

Hey guys I've finally gotten back to this project of digital capture of the ground glass. Attached is a shot to test the validity of the concept which has lead me to constructing a new back for my camera on which to mount the digital camera. I'll post more images as I finish the build and test it out.

Hi Ray, quite a nice idea and results are interesting. But instead of photographing the ground glass image, have you considered removing the gg and focusing on the aerial image? This would preserve the imaging characteristics of the lens without introducing the 'artefacts' of the ground glass.

Thanks Barry, I had considered what you propose, but unfortunately I know too little about optics to work out how one could achieve that.
I quite like the grainy artifacts. In fact I mostly shoot FB paper negs and then oil them before contact printing so that the grain shows in the final print.
