Mount StillwellGelatin-silver photograph on Ultrafine Silver Eagle VC FB photographic paper, image size 24.4cm X 19.6cm, from a 8x10 Fomapan 100 negative exposed in a Tachihara 810HD triple extension field view camera fitted with an Apo-Nikkor 610mm f9 lens. Titled, signed, and stamped verso.
Mount Stillwell is Australia's ninth highest peak at 2040 metres and towers over Charlotte Pass Village. From the camera position the peak is about one kilometre distant but the lens stopped down to f128 is still sharp enough (just!) to render the trig frame at the top of the mountain. The exposure time by lens cap was 2 seconds. The major difficulty apart from lugging a 8x10 outfit at altitude was waiting (and getting cold) for the cloud to define the edge of the mountain against the sky. In the high country the southern sky is a very dark blue that panchromatic film renders nearly the same tone as rock.
