Not often that we encounter "village" character like this in rural Oz.

I'm thinking that the conifers enfolding the church-like building are not a coincidence. There is a deep tradition going back to pagan and Roman times to plant yew trees or cypresses next to temples particularly those associated with funerary rites. The dark shade associated with groves of these trees may be sombrely appropriate. An alternative explanation may come from the desirability of dense evergreen foliage sheltering the church during winter storms when other trees are leafless.
Walter, you see some downright interesting stuff.

Thanks Maris.

My knowledge of plant types is insufficient to offer any sort of verbal definition. I suspect these are not yew trees. I did see many yew trees in the UK and some are absolutely ancient. dating back to Roman times and before. They have served mankind incredibly well in so many ways.

It was initially the 'hide-and-seek' quality of the church portal lurking in ambush that triggered my heliographic response.
