Isle of Mull, Inner hebrides, UK and Parramatta, NSW, Australia

These photographs were shot in the middle of the Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides, off the West Coast of Scotland.

However, everything within the boundary of the circular stone wall is sovereign territory of the State of New South Wales, Australia. Amid the lofty granite ridges of Mull (an extension of the Highlands) and all the local vegetation, in the distance on a large print there is even a grove of eucalypts to reinforce the sense of tenure.

Why?

Because this is the personal mausoleum of Governor Lachlan Macquarie and his wife of harbourside chair fame. It was Macquarie's vision of what the penal colony of New South Wales had the potential to become that largely set the wheels in motion that Australia might become what it is today.

Here are a couple of other Macquarie pics from the site of his Government House at Parramatta. His Bath House:

Lovely photographs, Walter, and interesting history, too. Reminds me that I should mount the print of no.1 you gave me. Beautiful print quality, and you said it was only a work print! :o

Great Isle.

Did you get across to Iona?

Indeed I did, Lachlan. In fact, spent one night sleeping on the beach there.

That whole area is magnificent. Jealous of you having a big big camera with you!

The other great benefit was a night in Fionnphort where I was treated to the local speciality of kelp fed lamb (flushed down with a pint or tow of the black stuff). I'd seen sheep grazing on rocks on the drive down the island and mine-host explained that it resulted in a delicacy.
It wasn't that big of a camera — just 4x5. I was tracing the writings of the Venerable Bede among other things so Iona and Lindisfarne were major motifs.

Walter, superb pictures and an intriguing and informative backstory! The second picture has a familiar 4:5 aspect ratio but all the others are 1:2 or 2:1 so I have to ask if they are a well ordered crop or were you using a special camera. I follow your work and don't see the panoramic format very often.

Thanks Maris,

The top shot was shot on 5x4 with a Scheider Super-Angulon XL 58 mm 1:5.6 with a filter. There was vignetting which I cropped to approaching 2:1.

The others were taken with a Sinar Zoom RFH set to 6x12.

I come and go on 6x12. The old cine cameraman in me likes the 2:1 because it is a bit like wide-screen and allows a dialogue between left and right. However, the whim is never long-lived. It does occur to me, of course, that perhaps 5x7 is where my eyes live. [doffs hat to Paul Caponigro, the Bechers, and George Tice.]
