Strangely enough Welly,
When I have been in England and see the Union Flag flying all over the place it has always struck me as a battle standard — which I guess it was. Our Australian flag, by comparison, does not have that impact (maybe because I am so used to it and it has become benign) but looks instead like a corporate identification. I guess it is still ultimately a rallying point.
Amidst the hype of the current events in London I guess the flag, any flag, is at its most potent, but I am not a nationalist and believe we would be better served by symbols of unity rather than symbols of tribal division left over from the past.
