Good spot! It almost doesn't look like a real camera and more a DIY project that hasn't quite been finished.

Whatever it is it still symbolises "camera" even though no one, present company excluded, has one or uses one. Maybe it's like the curious warning sign at a railway track crossing that shows a steam locomotive in profile. Everybody thinks "train", even people who may not have seen a real steam loco.
