Tom's Boat.

Postby Maris » 22 Feb 2023, 13:15

Image
Tom's Boat
Gelatin-silver photograph on Ultrafine Silver Eagle VC FB photographic paper, image size 18.0cm X 22.7cm, from a 8x10 Kodak Tmax 400 negative exposed in a Tachihara 810HD field view camera fitted with a Fujinon-W 300mm f5.6 lens.

Had to crop this 8x10 contact print to level the horizon. A tripod leg had sunk slightly in the lake mud and tilted the camera. I should have double checked before putting the film holder in but didn't. That'll teach me.

I wouldn't worry about that Maris, it's the brilliant tonality that makes this image (and the composition, of course).

I'd be interested to see the tilted version, sometimes it can really make a composition. Robert Adams California series for example.

Thanks for your comments Barry Kirsten and RoganJosh. The original crooked horizon photograph is deep in the archive ... somewhere.
But I could have presented the original uncropped picture and then claimed an artistic trope called the "Dutch Tilt" or "Dutch Angle". A deliberate out-of-level camera is supposed to imbue a picture with a sense of disorientation and tension. Too twee for me, though.

The composition with Tom's boat in the foreground and (Thomasina's? :D ) boat in the background completely capture one's eyes, the crooked horizon was only noticeable to me, because you mentioned it.
