Brisbane Group Exhibtion

I know there are quite a few talented large format photographers in Brisbane (not sure how many are on this forum), and I thought I should propose some sort of group exhibition to be shown within the next year in a Brisbane gallery. If we exhibit just a few of our best prints each we can split gallery space hire costs. Plus if everyone does a little networking and advertising we can certainly make it a well visited show.

It would also be a great way to get to know each other and if it's popular enough we could make it an annual event

In principle it's a good idea. I've mounted several exhibitions over the years. There's a lot to do if it's done right and a lead time of about a year is realistic to get gallery space and firm committments from exhibitors. And the money has to be solidly in place; no iou's.

The exhibition cycle can be exhilarating but it is also grim work: you take 'em, you make 'em, you hang 'em, you look at them, you take 'em down, and then you go and do it all over again. But the discipline and detail of the process can add rigor and realism to one's artistic proclivities. That, I reckon, is the most valuable part.

I've been photographing for less than a year so I'm definitely an amateur as well mighew. Yeah QCP is definitely on the cards.

Definitely keen.. I know another who like myself has a few 50+ inch prints sitting about that could be displayed.. Hopefully you don't mind medium format? Mine are 20*60inch from 6x17. My mates are 40*50 inch from 4x5..

Alexn, medium format is fine, if you were going by cubic cm of film size I would consider 6x17 pretty much large format anyway haha. I haven't done too much research on galleries but QCP seems an excellent contender due to its great facility and specific allegience to photography.

Yeah 6x17 in my opinion is LF...

So who's doing what? organisation etc? Who is contacting QCP to get a price and amount of wall space (remembering that a 20x60, or 40x50 print takes up a HEAP of wallspace... I have some smaller ones at around 14x40" but refuse to print LF work smaller than that because the extreme detail that is the reward for large format photography gets lost in translation when looking at an 8x24" print... If you have to squint to see the detail it may as well not be there.

I guess you could always hang a few long prints on top of each other to save space.

A good thing about QCP is that everything from floorplan to prices is up on the website...something not so good is that its a popular gallery for upcoming artists so it may be difficult to get our proposal noticed.

I think we will have a good chance if we propose a specific theme of say landscape photography (?) for a month. Galleries love themselves a themed show.

The reason I proposed that it should be within a year and not sooner is that my work is unscanned and unprinted so im sure that will take some time. I dont plan on scanning and printing any larger than 16x20 when the time comes so hopefully that wont cost me a fortune.

Yeah QCP's prices look reasonable enough... if we got 4 people and went for Gallery 2 (17.6m) for 990, its under $250 per person for a months worth of gallery space.. 4.4m per person, so 3x 1m wide prints each...

Thats not bad at all..

Sounds great Alexn, as long as they let us divide the space up. I've never seen it divided before, but if we stick to a specific theme like greater brisbane large format(ish) landscapes I cant see a problem. I'll shoot off an email and see what they say.
