G’day Lachlan,
May can be a great time in Tasmania with relatively stable weather and beautiful diffused light. I’m not sure how much walking you’ll be inclined to do with all your gear so the following suggestions are easily accessed from the roadside.

As mentioned, the Tarkine coast is magnificent and quite varied. South of Arthur River, the area around Couta Rocks and Sunset Point has some amazing geology. Further south, near Strahan, are the Henty dune-fields which are also worth a look.

One mountain range which is spectacular, but receives relatively few visits, is the West Coast Range. It's actually a series of ranges running from near Rosebery in the north to south of Queenstown. Mount Murchison, near Rosebery, is one of the easier sections to access.

If you do head down toward Lake Gordon you’ll pass the so called Valley of the Giants (big Mountain Ash) in the Styx valley not far out of Maydena. You also have the option of taking the road south to Scotts Peak dam. You’re at least a days walk from the main mountain ranges themselves but there are some impressive vistas out toward the Western Arthur and Frankland Ranges. On the way you also pass Mount Ann, the highest peak in the south west, which can be climbed as a day trip if your really keen and start early enough.

I might add that much of Tasmania is still exceptionally dry at the moment so many of the waterfalls may not be looking their best.

Have a great trip.
M

Thank-you vet my CB for this!

Just what I was hoping for.

2 more shift, and then time for a cheeky beer on a boat.

Really, really shit weather.

Too windy for LF.

Too wet for waterfalls. (Liffey was looking like Pipeline, there was so much water).

Turning into an iPhone reconnaissance trip. BOOOO!

Take heart, mate. I think the forecast is improving. Good to hear there has been rain, so the waterfalls and streams should be good for a while. Looking forward to seeing some of your work.

Finally got a couple of dry hours... (Although it's now raining again).

Is that your self-made camera, Lachlan. It is certainly a fine looking beast atop that massive Manfrotto (is it a 161?). I used to have and use one with the 400 geared head when I was younger and fitter but I am no longer certain of the model number.

Certainly is a 161 Mk2. With a Majestic head. Great combo, but I certainly know I've hiked with it when the first beer Knicks the dust if...

The camera is the Korona. I'm still working on the bellows for the home built (and building and 8x10... And fixing a Speed Graphic... And learning how to use a Mamiya C30...)

First 2 (of only three) images I took with the 7x17" are on Facebook under "Agfox Photography".

I'll chuck them here once I've got a copy of the third one.

Also got three colour 4x5s and a 6x17cm somewhere...
