Thanks for the link Walter.

I'm not sure how I feel about Crewdson and his images. They are certainly beautiful and well made.

Crewdson himself has said things to indicate that he has no particular love for photography. He doesn't even trip the shutter, he has a camera operator. He says he is most interested in images.

Gregory Crewdson has certainly fashioned an opulent "series of haunting, surreal, and stunningly elaborate portraits of small-town American life" and they are a generous entertainment for the eye. But they are "pretend portraits" of directed people acting out fictional tableaux.

A striking counter-example to the Crewdson aesthetic could be Bruce Davidson's photo-essay on American life: "East 100th Street". Here there are real (and sometimes dangerous) Americans pausing in their ordinary lives to respond to Davidson's large format camera.

The contrast between the two approaches highlights the uncertain division between mockumentary and documentary.

He takes hundreds of shots on 108
And photoshops them all together
I emailed one of his entourage once and he said 3-500 can't remember.

A lot.
