I put a couple of sheets through developer..

..then stop and then developer again(!). Firstly, that'll teach me to not label my bottles - I ran some sheets last night through D76, stop and then Microphen, which I thought didn't smell quite like fixer but threw caution to the wind and used it anyway.

Secondly, I was a bit perplexed as to why the sheets continued to develop - not a lot, but a little - after they had been stopped? My stop bath is not that old so certainly shouldn't be exhausted. A shame, because having been suggested I shoot my Foma 100 at ISO80 rather than 100, they looked much less thin and when I put them in the "fix" they looked pretty good. Thankfully it was a few shots from the railway workshop so I can go capture them again. I guess that was a lesson.

Any clues?

How do you know that they kept developing?

Take a tip from your Aunty's day - put a band-aid on the bottle with the name of the contents as she did with her home made marmalade and lemon curd.

A stop bath "stops" dev by decreasing pH. When you introduced the new dev you have effectively diluted the small amount of stop agent that was in the emulsion, thus the dev continued.

That's good to know you can keep developing after stop.

I used just water last night as ran out of stop had no vinegar and it worked fine.

In that case it would be easier to re start development I would imagine.

Mainly because I could see the tone of the negative changing before my eyes. At which point I thought "shit, I knew this wasn't fixer".
