Drip marks in jobo neggs

Postby Andrew Nichols » 17 Dec 2012, 18:19

Hi all.

I have a random recurring problem that requires a few salty whiskers to sort out.

I use jobo and shoot 810
Some negs come out fine some have drip marks shown in photo detail.

It's an interesting but unwanted look.

Works well for this character
But am scared to do any more unti I sort out I will tray it one at a time.

(always scratch more than one with thise pin sharp corners)

I thought at first it was not pre-soaking and have dev eat into neg between pouring and agitation
But I pre soaked my last round and had similar probs.

Any ideas will be grreatly appreciated.

Andrew

Do you use a Jobo processor, or just a tank?

Because, looking at these (and wearing my Dexter blood-spatter expert hat), the marks are caused by (IMO) developer splashing on the undeveloped film.

If you're not using a processor, and pouring the Dev in whilst the opening is facing up, I think the Dev is splashing the film as it hits the bottom of the film chamber.

The idea is to add the chemicals whilst the tank is rolling. It would be a risk if you're dumping chems in while it is not agitating.

Waddayathink?

Right. Here goes:

You need to have the tank on its side. Doing this means that you'll need a way to do two things:

First, spin the tank. If you haven't got a Jobo processor, then you'll need some rollers. This can be something like a Beseler Roller (see http://www.flickr.com/photos/okay_banana/3347704613/) that will power the agitation/rolling. Another way is to get an old skateboard and cut its middle out so that the tank rolls on the opposing wheels.

The second thing you'll need to work out is a funnel/hose system to get the juice into the tank. Probably best that you Google this, as there are lots of contraptions out discussed out there. Perhaps start at LFPF; I know it's been discussed there.

This is not a difficult thing to get around, and I'd be happy to help you with this.

Once you have this up and running, you'll be happy as a pig in smelly mud with your results!

I use Unicolour drums which don't get filled while rotating but they are lying down, but I have never had this problem.

I guess any old wheels from the hardware screwed to a piece of wood.
And a large syringe of some sort.

Thanks Lachlan.

Have a think about a funnel attached to a hose.

As for the rollers, have a captain at the Reject Shop for one of their shitty skateboards. Wide wheels will help.

Make sure you use excess dev. You might not be placing enough in..
