Re: Necropolis Architecture (& some statuary)

This is a beautifully controlled set of compositions in an area where there is visual "clutter" at all scales, close, medium, and far. Picture number two has a superb horizon/sky line. Normally horizons start somewhere up the left side, wander across the picture space, and exit somewhere a...

Re: The Inverted Tree

What a beautiful high key study! If you are going to do more please show them. I'd like to see how you work around such a prominent tattoo. When I photograph people with a lot of ink my pictures tend to converge (inadvertently, unconsciously?) on a theme dominated by the tatts.

Re: Ocean Baths, Newcastle

The recently late and eternally great Geoffrey Smart could have painted a scene like this...but he didn't. But Geoff Roberts sure didn't miss it. Superbly seen! Is it too gauche to ask the technical details and the story behind the picture?

Re: Funeral Bouquet, Artificial Flowers.

I made this photograph when the New Zealand Pike River coal mine disaster was large in the news and large in my thoughts. I think of the 29 that died there everytime I look at it. Photographs can be life's punctuation marks that recall and remind.

Re: How do I store sheet film?

Unopened boxes live in re-sealable plastic bags stacked edge on in the film 'fridge freezer. Opened boxes are in the same plastic bags but in the 4 Celcius 'fridge space. Precautions include sucking the air out of the plastic bags before sealing, letting film warm slowly to room temperature before l...

Re: Print washing sequence

My FB paper archival wash sequence goes like this: Drain the fix out of the paper by holding it in my tongs over the fixer tray for as many seconds as there are inches in the diagonal dimension. A 8x10 sheet drains in 13 seconds. The sheet then is placed on the surface of water in a holding tray unt...

Re: Member photos

Pictures of some of my photographs sleep at http://www.flickr.com/photos/54704995@N02/. All of them are scans of the actual gelatin-silver photographs. Original negatives include the 8x10, 4x5, and 120 rollfilm formats. Nothing has been synthesised in Photoshop.

Re: Enlarging lens

My enlarging lens requirements changed when I ditched 35mm (decades ago!) and moved to large format and some occasional rollfilm. The bigger negatives don't need extreme enlarging ratios and short focal lengths. My rollfilm negatives go through a 135mm lens and 150mm serves for the 4x5 format. I've ...

Re: Humanity takes millions of photos every day...

You've heard this before but it's worth repeating in the context of "Humanity takes millions of photos...": the problem or dismay is created by reconceptualising photography away from "the making of pictures out of light sensitive substances" into the "making of pictures any...
