Re: Here's a GO! What's holding you back?

Definitely no! Been there, done that...sort of. The harsh reality of photographing as an employee is that you end up with no photographs of your own. Copyright, moral rights, physical possession all belong to the boss. A distant pal of mine worked for a state government doing pictures of national pa...

Re: Snow Gum in Rain #2.

Barry, you're right about the beauties of wet Snow Gum bark. A couple of years ago I accompanied a photographer doing colour close-ups of bark. She had me carrying a bucket of water and a bannister brush. When a nice pattern was seen I had to paint the area with water to make the colours "pop&q...

Re: Snow Gum in Rain #2.

Compulsion indeed, Walter, and I'm making these photographs, for better or worse, AS IF they are art.
As Pablo Picasso famously and coarsely put It "If you are an artist you know you have to make pictures just like you know you have to piss!"

Re: Rhys

Crikey, that's a strong portrait! You must have had nearly all the camera bellows stretched out to get a full face image with a 14" lens. When I try this style of portraiture I focus on the eyes and then wrangle the Scheimpflug condition by tilting the back of the camera to bring the middle of ...

Re: Back Eddy

There are versions where the creek bed is rendered darker and the result is certainly abstract. But finally I backed off and let the creek bed and cloud reflections remain recognisable: semi-abstract. It's a typical art-angst decision and not always for the best.

Re: Electrical Storm.

Electrifying picture! Were you perhaps using a metal camera on a metal tripod under a lightning storm? I'd be fearful of a 30 million volt over-exposure.

Re: Coomera Gorge.

Yes, that's a dramatic and beautiful scene. And it seems to offer lots of places for the exploring photographer to break a leg. That Mamiya Super 23 is a spiffy minature view camera when you use the rear bellows. Years ago I lugged one through the Noosa National Park doing deep focus landscapes via ...

Paper Import Adventure.

If you want superb gelatin-silver paper with prompt delivery, minimum fuss, and minimum anxiety buy it from Chris at Blanco Negro. But I had some spare time to scour the world for a bargain and I thought I found it in Adorama's New York store. Their house brand "Adorama Variable Grade Glossy Fi...

Re: Leaf Fall

Did you use a yellow filter to whiten the leaves? Love how they bust from everywhere. Actually a #25 Red for this exposure. And yes the aim was to move the yellow leaves up the tonal scale so they would gleam more prominently. The result was muted a bit by a heavily overcast day that delivered a lo...
