Re: f128 Snow Gum Dance

Those are very informative observations Mick. I live and learn! It wouldn't be a surprise if the original research on emulsion chemistry was done at convenient European room temperatures and tap water temperatures; maybe 20 Celcius or thereabouts. And the commercial products of those times, plates, ...

Re: Myles

No Tachi for this one. I'm down to eight view cameras about the house but not including the Plaubel 8x10 monorail which is sold. I hope it doesn't hurt its new owner. Plaubels are a typically over-engineered heavy metal European design best used on a studio stand.

Snow Gum Skeleton

Sometimes I reckon it's ok to let a photograph go the way it wants to go. This photograph has deep shadows and gleaming white wood in brilliant sunshine. I could have metered the whites and the shadows and controlled the zones by giving N-2 development but the result might be mild rather than wild. ...

Re: Elegant Mangrove

Walter, there was no perfect place to stand. The 8x10 full format contact photograph means no cropping. The framing is a compromise. Too far forward and the camera and tripod (and photographer) sink in the muddy sand. Too far back and the bunch of leaves doesn't line up with the bright patch in the ...

Re: WTD: wide 8x10 lens

Don't forget the smallest, lightest (mine's 380g with lens board), cheapest, wide angle for the 8x10 format: the Wollensak Velostigmat Wide Angle Ser. III f9.5 8x10 6 1/4" Focus. This 159mm lens also comes in a f12.5 version. Coated and uncoated versions exist. I got mine for $120 off eBay. Sto...

Re: Congratulations Maris

Thanks for your kind and encouraging words. And you are right, I've been quiet but I plead photographic necessity: Six weeks of blizzards, snow, and ice, in the high country with a 4x5 camera. Days and days of darkroom work turning exposures into negatives. The f11 thing; lots of text, lots of editi...
