Re: Brisbane Group Exhibtion

In principle it's a good idea. I've mounted several exhibitions over the years. There's a lot to do if it's done right and a lead time of about a year is realistic to get gallery space and firm committments from exhibitors. And the money has to be solidly in place; no iou's. The exhibition cycle can...

Less Panoramic Action.

I've been gazing at those wonderful panoramas in the previous post and wondering at the special vision needed to do them. I can't see the world that way. A quick look through my recent work shows a fair majority of landscapes are in the vertical "portrait" format. The classic parallel is t...

Re: Commercial Guy Still Using Film

Me - I am an UN-retired commercial photographer using only black and white silver gelatine materials John I admire your trajectory and wonder at the parallels with my own experience. I went: 1977 no more colour photography.....except for commercial work. 1995 large format 8x10 only.....except for c...

Re: WTB: Cambo 4x5 ground glass

I make all my replacement ground-glasses. It takes about 20 minutes of mild labour. First get two pieces of window glass or clear picture frame glass cut to the exact size by the local glass shop. Ask them to ease the edges to avoids cuts when handling. Then put one piece on a pad of wet newspaper s...

Re: The 8x10 is ready to see duty .....

An odd story - Do you have a 10x8" enlarger? - Have you tried contact printing?.... John A very valid question and comment. The 8x10 format gives productive access to silver and non-silver techniques via contact exposure. And those contacts are big enough to have presence and power when held i...

Re: Try Getting Your Head Around This:

I can't get hard technical details on this but I suspect it relies pulsed laser technology to create pictures as if they were taken with a trillion fps camera. By strobing a time ramped laser over several seconds (minutes, hours?), accumulating images, and then running them at a tv frame rate could ...

Re: What enlarger light source

Enlargers are cheap all right. Over the years I got a 35mm one (Durst) , three 4x5s (Omega, Gilkon, Meopta), a 5x7 (Durst 138) , and a 8x10 (Durst 184) all for free apart from the cost of going and collecting them. It's unlikely I'll get around to using them all!

Re: The bit I hate most..

The bit I scared of is picking up the negative and missing the stop bath tray. How do you use trays in the dark.. I use a unicolour tank in day light Don't you simply place the trays next to each other and go from one to the next? Yes, that's the best way to do it. If it's the same trays at the sam...

Re: The bit I hate most..

Scratched negatives? I know what that feels like. Years ago I determined to master the shuffle method for doing stacks of sheet film. After a lot of diligent effort I could not get guaranteed scratch free results so I gave up. 8x10 is now one sheet face up in a tray but developed hot to save time. S...
