Manly Beach, Afternoon

Postby Maris » 17 May 2026, 12:02

Image
Manly Beach, Afternoon
Gelatin-silver photograph on Ultrafine Silver Eagle VC FB photographic paper, image size 16.3cm X 21.5cm,
from a 4x5 Kodak Tmax 400 negative exposed in a Tachihara 45GF field view camera fitted with a Fujinon-W 300mm f5.6 lens.

The Tachihara 45GF is a light-weight wooden field camera that is challenged to hold and focus a large and heavy lens like the Fujinon-W 300mm f5.6 in its Copal 3S shutter. The set-up is not quite stable and sags a bit. I was worried about wind movement because I delayed exposure until the surfer carrying his board in the lower middle of the picture was not overlapped by other figures. The moment came.

Interesting viewpoint to capture the beach there, Maris.

I like your surfboard swimmer, perfect look.

Have you thought of cropping the extreme right swimmer in the water?

Is the Tachihara a single or double extension camera? I agree, a heavy lens when running near the maximum extension can be an issue with even slight wind.

Greetings Mick. I gave up trying to corral the crowd on the camera's ground glass. One can stay under the dark cloth only so long. Look at that unfortunate couple getting the chop along the left bottom edge.

It's just an ok picture but I like it for the common but unworthy reason that it was hard to do but still came out!

The Tachihara 45GF camera is a front focussing double extension design with a maximum 310mm bellows draw. A 300mm lens uses most of of this bellows draw leaving the focussing rack just hanging onto the front of camera bed, just.
