That's nice oblique light bringing out the fake shingles on the bays and pelmets. It must have been a popular architectural trope a hundred years ago because the building next door bears those shingles as well.
Republican? Too subtle for me even though the clue must be in plain sight.

Hi Maris,

Yes it was the mode du jour right along the sea front at Bondi when development proper kicked off.

As it happenss, the photograph was taken on the morning of 30th January, 2001 — the Centebary of Federation and the folks in the bottom left flat celebrated by pinning an Australian Red Ensign with Union Jack surgically removed to the shingles.
