Cooloothin Creek Swimming Hole
Gelatin-silver photograph on Ultrafine Silver Eagle VC FB photographic paper, image size 19.3cm X 24.7cm, from a 8x10 Fomapan 200 negative exposed in a Tachihara 810HD field view camera fitted with a Apo-Nikkor 610mm f9 lens.

Noosa Shire is blessed with kilometres of sandy beaches and sparkling surf but some benighted individuals want to swim in the black tannin-stained, snag-ridden waters of Cooloothin creek. This jungle stream harbours large format marine life, stingrays, bull sharks, and the like. And with the inexorable advance of global warming crocodiles will move in too.

It's hard to understand some people. Who would want to swim in a dirty and dangerous spot like that when there are pristine beaches nearby? A worthy subject for photography, though. I notice you used Fomapan 200 Maris. It seems to perform well enough. Was the light rather flat? I have a fresh box of it in the freezer for the 5x7, when I'm allowed out of lockdown to go photographing.

Fomapan 200 is an unremarkable panchromatic film that I rate at EI 100. In the 8x10 format (when contact printing) grain is invisible and sharpness is better than the eye can see. It comes in boxes of 50, not 10 like Kodak's offerings, and at about AUD 4.50 per sheet landed from the USA it's not eye wateringly expensive. Cooloothin Creek was shot at 2 seconds at f128, no reciprocity correction.

On my little laptop screen the sunlit clusters of foliage throughout stand out in almost 3-D relief — quite marvellous, I wonder if that's possibly a function of having just a modicum of grain for the pixels and the eye to grab onto? Marvellously seen and printed, Maris.

Nicely printed. It has the look of an old woodcut engraving.
