Water In Lake George ACT

Postby Walter Glover » 18 Feb 2021, 19:31

Lake George is an endorheic lake, as it has no outflow of water to rivers and oceans. It. is seen here from a parking bay on the souther shore along the Federal Highway between the Hume Highway, south of Goulburn, and Canberra.
The lake is believed to be more than a million years old. At 25 km (16 mi) long and 10 km (6.2 mi) wide, Lake George is long, largely flat and extremely shallow, with a very small catchment. Resultant evaporation rates as well as a tendency for strong winds to blow the water back on itself explain the mysterious filling and drying episodes on both short term (hours) and long term (years) time scales that have been observed.

Is it the view from the Badcoe VC Rest Area? Thanks Walter for taking this photograph to remind us all what this view looked like before that serene range of hiils gets covered by hulking great rows of wind-turbines.
