Tasmania

Postby Alastair Moore » 10 Mar 2013, 18:15

Just a place holder at the moment but I'm currently in Hobart. What a lovely part of the world this is! Have just got back from Port Arthur. A fascinating area and one I'd like to return to again for a proper explore.

Haven't been able to get as many shots taken as I'd like as I'm with my folks but plan to start ramping it up a bit more from tomorrow. Got two today for a start.

I passed by/through Dunalley. I assume people have heard about the fires there. It was quite incredible. Houses literally burned to the ground and only brickwork surviving. I did want to take some photographs but part of me felt like it was a bit disrespectful and any photos would just be "disaster porn". However a little further up the road, the gum trees, as a result have turned incredible colours. The tree trunks are burned half way up and the leaves have turned fiery red and orange colours. It looks spectacular (unfortunately), particularly with a few of the gum trees that didn't catch fire and are still green. I will try and capture some images of this as I have a few boxes of Velvia.

Last evening in Tasmania. Currently on the east coast close to Coles Bay. It's absolutely beautiful here and I'll be back as soon as I can. Hopefully have a few good shots from the week. This really is quite an incredible part of Australia. Very inspiring.

Here's my first two from Tasmania. Pretty quick scans which need a bit of work. While I had my camera with me most of the time, it wasn't a photography holiday so couldn't spend too much time shooting. So felt a bit rushed with a lot of the photos. But anyway, here's a couple to start with. Will be developing the black and white this weekend.

Tessellated pavement, Tasmania.

Toyo 45AX, Nikkor-W 150mm, Fomapan 100 in D76.

Seems I've underdeveloped a bunch of sheets, which is very annoying and disappointing. At least I've got another load to develop and give them a bit more time.

Tree overlooking Lake Saint Clair, Tasmania. Fomapan 100. I feel like I'm having real problems with Fomapan. When I did some testing a few weeks back, the time I developed was 6:30 at 24c for what looked to me a good negative. I did the same last night - 6:30 at 24c and all my negatives were terrible. It's only due to the wonders of science and technology I've managed to get an image out of them! I've got a few sheets left of this box of Fomapan and then I've got a box of TMax 100. I think I'm going to spend some time with the TMax and see if things improve/are more consistent and make my decision if that's going to be my film of choice. Anyway, have another 6 or so sheets to develop today so will see how I get on.

What's the rationale with running these through at 24 degrees (i.e. warmer than the "standard" 20-ish)?

Mainly that's because the temperature that's coming out of the tap but I'm reducing development time to suit. I may have to experiment with 20(ish) and see if I see any differences.
