I have always liked the Ned Kelly view of the world with pano formats. Clearly you have developed a fine eye for the aspect ratio.

Me too... I find panoramics to be the perfect way to view a landscape. I feel it mimics my actual vision.. When I look at a location, my natural eyesight almost matches a 6x17 field of view with a 90mm lens.. even when I was shooting digital I used to crop almost all my shots 3:1 as I always composed my shots such that the prime area of interest fit into the 6x17 sort of view. As soon as I bought the 4x5 I started cropping 4x5 sheets to this ratio... That seemed crazy (and was expensive) so I invested in roll film backs and since then I have exclusively shot 6x12 and 6x17

Have you tried shooting 6x15 (2.5:1)? Since getting into 7x17, I find that 6x17cm (3:1) is often too wide for my vision. I never really liked 2:1 (6x12) as I thought that it was too "blocky".

4x10 Velvia would probably be my ultimate format as it is the biggest colour pano currently available. Mind you, I've promised myself a batch of 7x17 Velvia (special order) when I win Powerball. Only $20k+ to order!!

I do like 2.5:1, and as you know Lachlan, I would love a 7x17, or even a 4x10. The big factor with 4x10 is cost and availability of suitable film (Fuji Velvia 50 is being discontinued in 4x5 and 8x10 as of December this year) and 7x17, well, the choices are are all BW... I feel the same about 6x12 sometimes.. For some shots I find it works well... Sometimes 4x5 is just a touch too tall and 6x17 is too narrow for the scene, 6x12 suits nicely in these cases, though I'm sure 6x15 would too.. Maybe better. I do agree that 2:1 looks a bit odd usually... I do like getting 6 shots on a roll instead of 4 on 617.. :) haha. I do not know of any camera that shoots 6x15 on roll film... Would be nice to have something that did 617, 615 and 612..... multi format panocam! :)

4x10 would be beautiful.. I suppose you could still shoot Velvia 100 or Provia... But its just not the same...

The Gaoersi 6x17 does all three but I really cannot work out how you frame count for 6x15, as 3 x 4.5 is 13.5, and there are no frame numbers for 6x7.
I actually do like the 6x12 format, and also have some 4x10 FP4+ ready to use, I just need a way to secure it into a 8x10 filmholder.

Hey Lachlan, any chance you could upload a pic of one of your 7x17 slides on a light box or similar? I'd love to see what it looks like!

Hi, Shane.

My DaYi back has 3 windows; one for each format (612, 615 and 617). They're somewhat offset, meaning that they correspond to those numbers that you referred to. Mind you, in order to change formats, you need to insert those baffles, making changing formats mid-roll impossible. Mind you, can you imagine trying to work out what frame (in which window) to go to?

If yours doesn't have these windows, I'll try to work out what frame number in the 617 window corresponds to the the 615 and let you know.

Will do; just know that it's B&W only in this sized format (well, until I win Powerball and get some Velvia custom cut). I'll see whether I can put a strip of 35mm on there as well to gauge the difference in size.

Ahh ok, I do recall you saying that somewhere else on here. Either way, that'd be great!
