Alastair,
You are better to have a couple of varying sizes rather than a really big one as a fix-all. I'd suggest something around 16x12 and a 24x20. In an ideal world an 11x14 or smaller can be very handy also.
It is amazing how often the support column will get in the way with a large easel.
