Fuji GX680III

Postby jars121 » 13 Sep 2012, 10:14

I know, I know. It's not technically large format, but it's about as big as medium format gets, so I thought I'd post it anyway. I've been trying to decide between the RZ67 ProII and the 680 III, and finally bit the bullet and bought this beauty yesterday. I've already got the Kapture Group OneShot adapter, so there's potential to make this a digital setup in the (distant) future. For now, I'm looking to forward to shooting a heap of Tri-X, Ektar and Portra.

It's huge! Is that tilt and shift on the lens I see?

Congratulations and happy trails with your new travel companion.

I never had one but I thought about having one often enough.

What lens(es) do you have with it?

It sure is :) The movements are relatively minor compared to view cameras, but they'd come in handy for the type work I like to do. The bellows focussing system allows macro-ish shooting with all lenses as well, which I'm quite excited about!

Just for reference, here's a picture of the 680 (albeit with the loupe finder, not the prism finder) compared to some other MF gear:

I can't wait to have a play with it! That's the photo from the seller, as it's still in the US at the moment. This one comes with the 250mm f/5.6, which from all accounts is a very capable lens.

Jeepers. I used to have an RB67 and I know how big that is. Did you get a deal?

I'd like to think so ;)

I got everything you can see in the first picture (Body, prism finder, 2 mk.IIIn [latest generation] film backs, wide angle bellows, 250mm f/5.6, 1M cable release and 11 assorted/random films) for US$850 delivered. I've been watching these on eBay for a couple of months now, and prices seem to vary quite a lot. The majority of these kits come straight from Japan, but often don't have any background, so you're not sure what you're getting. Mine has been checked tested, and is in almost flawless condition :)

Awesome. I've had a bit of a love/hate relationship with medium format and I'm not sure why. It's bigger than 35mm - but not a lot - and more inconvenient, however it's smaller than large format and less inconvenient - but not a lot.

I've always found I shoot the same kind of thing with medium format that I would do with large format but find myself thinking "I should be shooting this with large format".

I've bought a Crown Graphic from a guy in the States which should arrive sometime in the next couple of days, so I'm hoping that might scratch my portable, handheld film camera itch that medium format just never did.

That said, before I shot large format, I had an RB67 and loved it. So much so I gave up digital for it, but then I found out about large format.

I can totally relate to that. Fortunately/unfortunately I haven't been exposed to using LF just yet, so I'm still more than happy with MF. Plus, I'm just starting to get the hang of my Imacon, and it can only handle 35mm and MF haha.

I just unpacked it :D

First impressions: this thing is ENORMOUS. Every aspect of it is huge. The film backs are huge, the lens mount/lens is huge, the prism finder is huge. I love it.

Here's a quick photo of it behind/beside a D2x w/ Nikon 24-70.

Only slight downer about the whole exercise, is that the glass in the prism finder was shattered during transit. It's not a big deal, as I can easily cut a replacement piece.
