Basics of dev expo compo

Postby Andrew Nichols » 22 Dec 2012, 23:42

What is the basic idea of developing for different times based on exposure and film speed.
I hear it. A lot. And am getting ready to listen.

Is this question formulated correctly.
I only use an iPhone so my typing is painfull one finger jujitsu

Andrew get your head around the zone system. That will give you the basics. Google is your friend...

G'day Andrew

I'd suggest you start slowly, keep it simple and consider a few basic concepts;

film is rated at a particular sensitivity when it is exposed and processed within certain parameters,

as creative photographers we are often not able to, or may not want to, stay within the parameters,

consistency is the most important element in film processing,

consistency allows for meaningful assessment of results,

pick one film, one developer and one working method that can be applied consistently,

there are no "magic bullet" combinations of film and developer that suit all photographers and situations,

at first use the film manufacturers guidelines and learn to assess your results,

there are several simple methods that can be employed to change negative density and contrast,

increasing exposure and reducing development lowers contrast, and vice versa.
