The closeness to the subject makes the biggest impression, the light falling on the trunk lifts it a lot, but the corners being naturally dark push your eyes towards the trunk, with the background trees giving us the perfect foil to the immense looking trunk.

Would we normally see a bit of falloff if you hadn't had those already dark corners there?

Well seen Mick. The Schneider Super Angulon 121mm f8 lens doesn't really cover 8"x10" but it does cover (just) the actual picture area which is a tad smaller. But fall-off and dark corners are something to always watch out for particularly in the rendition of skies. That's what the big branch in the upper right corner of Massive Snow Gum does: blocks the sky, hides the fall-off....compromise, compromise.
